How to keep a deck on budget
- Pick the size first, then the material. A smaller composite deck can cost the same as a larger cedar one.
- Keep footings, ledger flashing and structural hardware. Cut stain, upgrades and extra railing first if the number has to come down.
- Put railing only where it is required (more than 30 inches off the ground) or wanted.
- If the frame is sound, a re-deck reuses it.

Questions
Do I need a permit for a deck?
Usually, if the deck is attached to the house, more than 30 inches off the ground, or over 200 square feet. We pull it and pass the fee through at cost.
Is composite worth it?
Composite costs more up front but never needs stain or sealer. Over 10 to 15 years, the stain and repair you skip often covers much of the difference.
How long does a deck take?
Most decks take one to two weeks on site once materials are in. Permits and HOA approval can add time before we start.
Can you reuse my old deck's frame?
Sometimes. If the joists, beams, ledger and footings are sound and to code, a re-deck saves money. We check on the walk and tell you straight.
